One evening, apropos of nothing in particular, Linda Petrat’s husband told her: “You’re not happy. I’m leaving,” and walked out the door, ending their 37-year marriage. After she picked herself off the floor, Linda hopped into her “good little boat”—a 22-foot Ensign racing sloop—and sailed from Kittery, Maine, to Sarasota, Florida, solo for all but the first few miles.
